Central Auckland giant Diggy Dupé returns with a fire under his feet on swaggering new single, ‘Keke Boy’. Over ominous trap production from Onehunga’s Smoke, Diggy snarls over vicious verses depicting his fierce CA loyalty. With support from NZ On Air, the new single arrives with a music video directed by Jordan Cherrington, following Diggy rep his streets with symbolic scenes of Polynesia seen throughout.
Opening with Niuean drums before a raw, menacing beat hits, ‘Keke Boy’ is a fusion of Dupé’s Niuean culture and Central Auckland slang. “It’s just how we speak, it’s a reflection of the culture clash we deal with every day,” says Diggy Dupé.
“One of the aims is to use island words as often as possible until it becomes the norm. We’ve got to set the standard and it provides a sense of pride and belonging when other Pacific Islanders hear their native tongue on a song other than an old hymn.”
“The video was obviously made well before lockdown – usually I’d be asking my DJ friends to play this track in clubs, and get together with mates to party to it. The best thing we can do is at the moment is stay where we are and do what we need to do. I hope ‘Keke Boy’ is a song that makes people feel good.”
‘Keke Boy’ is the first single taken from Diggy Dupé’s forthcoming full length debut album, set for release in mid 2020. The new single follows Dupé’s 2018 Island Time EP, which earned him a prestigious nomination for Best Hip Hop Artist at the 2019 VNZMA’s.
